In the late 1950s my Granddad had a stroke. He had retired to
Blackpool and he had been planing a sticking cupboard door when the
stroke occurred. Grandma somehow got him to bed and the doctor was
called. At the time I would have been aged about ten. The doctor
left a bottle of white medicine with instructions to give three spoonfuls per
day. Granddad did not want this medicine and barricaded the room door (he had worked as a manufacturing chemist
before he retired) Neighbours were called to force the door and the
medicine was given. On the third day after the stroke he was dead.
With hindsight there were two or three very strange occurrences in
this case. Firstly my Grandma told me that she asked the doctor if
there would be enough medicine. The reply was "Oh yes you'll have
enough". After Granddad had died the doctor called again presumably
to write out the death certificate but was seems odd to me is that
he took the bottle of "medicine" away with him. Granddad was
cremated so any evidence of what was in that bottle was lost.
Looking back it now seems that Granddad knew they were going to
poison him which is why he barricaded the door. If what I think went
on, went on this could make Harold Shipman look like an amateur.
Granddad was aged sixty eight but for some reason people in those
days were lucky to reach the biblical three score and ten. Now I'm
not a doctor but as far as I know, a stroke should not be fatal.
Grandma did not have a technical education as before she married
Granddad she worked as a Clippie on the trams. I think she was duped
into poisoning Granddad.

MY GRIPE Any advice on how to get a social worker. I had my stroke August
07, was
treated like shit then and still today. No wonder I'm suicidal and stressed all
the time. Maybe if I would have been treated properly and respectfully
then I might not feel this bad.

MY STORY In 2004 had a hemorrhagic stroke. I was left with my rt. leg being
paralyzed and a very slight speech deficit. A manual and a power wheelchair
have been my main source of getting around. I love the outdoors so winter is
difficult and depression sets in. Love the computer and communicating with
friends. If you'd like to read my 1st. yr. experience after my stoke and how my
life was changed I wrote a detailed account on the hospital website where I was
a patient for a month following the stroke. Email me if you'd like to hear my
story.

MY STORY My father had a storke on tues, and came home today. He claims
he was playing a joke by speaking with an irish accent (we are not irish) and
was speaking very loudly. Beside the fake accent, he "just wasn't dad". Is it
possible that it was not a joke, and he just thinks he was playing a joke? We do
not believe it was a joke, as he took the stroke very seriously. It is the first
stroke he's had, and was on the right side of his brain. -Thank you.

MY GRIPE, 18 weeks ago my father in law (66) had a sever stroke. He lives in
Kirklees (Yorkshire) and is in Wakefield hospital. The stroke attacked the left
side of his body resulting in extremely limited use of his left leg (He can't
walk but can stand holdig onto something although he is unable to get to a
standing position unaided.) He has no use at all of his left arm. His also has
visual impairment and massively reduced attention span. He has stopped making
progress and has been told that he will be discharged in three weeks. What I
need to know is what supports is he entitled to. He owns a semi deteached 3
bedroomed house but is not financially well off. Both he and his wife are
depended upon the state pension. At this stage it appears the states
responsibilty ends at the hospital door!

Hi, I am writing to find out if there is anyone out there that
has suffered a Thalamtic stroke and who has or is also suffering with central
nerve pain. I am writing on behalf of my mum, she has just turned 60 years old
and suffered the stroke 2 years ago, fortunately, she has not been left with
paraylisis to the side of her body but suffers stiffness and chronic unbearable
pain, the last 2 weeks she has suffered pain in her other arm and was taken to
hospital where captulitis was also diagnosed. She needs to find someone to talk
to who is experincing the same so she can talk to someone sympathetic as she
also had a traumatic experience with the hospital at the time she suffered her
stroke. please please email if you would like to get in touch with my mum, its
hard as a family member to fully understand what she and others are experiencing
although we do try our best and support her, thank you for reading and I wish
you all the best.

"Hi,
My nanna had a stroke just over a year ago and it has fallen on me and my sister and my mam to care for her. now i love my nan to death but she is now completely dependent and it is hard work. there are no real help available to carers of victims of a stroke and think that much is needed to be done.

"Under staffed, over worked, are four words that spring to mind. There's always enough money for Administration Managers, according to reports, there's more managers than beds, in the National Health Service, P R consultants and expensive working dinners, but not where it matters, at the sharp end. Why don't these people realise, the NHS is not there to provide them with a opportunity to pamper to their inflated egos, but to get the patients better. It maybe seems a bit naive, to expect this. But commonsense should enter in this equation, how many patients, have been wrongly diagnosed, because a over worked doctor was expected to work long hours, because it was financially beneficial in the short term, why did the doctor not send me immediately for a scan, was it he had to weigh up whether to waste money on the scan, and have it come back normal. Or they don't have that facility open at weekends, because of the overtime. Surely the powers that be, know that you can get ill at weekend. I apologise if I'm getting carried away, but it'll come clear later."CLICK HERE TO READ NOEL'S STORY
"After overcoming initial dificulties of getting in and out of the water, I have started visiting a local private pool, because I feel it will help in my recovery I was a strong swimmer and, before my stroke, swam weekly. Now, however, once in the water, I have no confidence and cannot take my feet off the bottom. Could you please advise of any outlets, especially those with a website, where I could obtain a suitable buoyancy aid"
